A Message from Amy

AmyMeet Ms. Amy Thompson, our new Health and Wellness Director!  Amy is the newest addition to the OTTUMWA FAMILY YMCA, and we’re blessed to have her.  She’s already proving to be a dynamic force here!  From expanding our schedule and teaching classes to working one on one with our instructors, she’s got her shoulder to the wheel keeping you safe and on the road to wellness.  Amy has jumped in with both feet, proving she’s got what we need to build a stronger, healthier, more united Wapello County.

Of course, we could go on all day about what Amy brings to these challenging times, but we’ll let her tell you in her own words!

“There are lots of exciting things happening in group fitness at the Y! We are expanding our class offerings to give members more choice. There is a class for everyone, no matter your fitness level, age, or intensity preference. Check out our current schedule here. There are no more limits on the number of classes you can take in a week, so feel free to register for as many as you like! Just remember to preregister for all classes via our website, phone (641-684-6571), or in person at the member services desk. Class registration begins on Fridays at 5:00am for the classes the following week.

We have expanded our mind and body class offerings (yoga, BodyFlow, and Tai Chi) in the mornings for individuals looking for more peace of mind in current times. These classes also increase flexibility, mobility, and balance as well as focusing on breathing, calmness, and mental clarity!

Silver Sneakers and Tai Chi classes will be returning the week of Aug. 31 at new times. Silver Sneakers will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00-8:45am and Tai Chi will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15-11:45am. Sign-ups for September Pilates classes will begin Aug. 20th.  Please call or speak to the staff at the member services desk to sign up. Space is limited, so reserve your spot now!

We are doing everything we can to keep safety in mind in fitness classes. Group fitness class size is still limited to 9 participants and 1 instructor. All participants have an individually marked Personal Safety Zone for class that is at least 6ft from other participants to maintain social distancing. All fitness equipment used in classes in sanitized after every use, and the studio floor is sanitized twice a day. Pilates classes are limited to 4 participants and 1 instructor to maintain 6ft of social distancing in the Wellness Studio, and the reformer machines are sanitized after every use. Hand sanitizer is available in all workout areas of the Y for member and staff use as often as desired.
