BUILDING A BETTER US

HeatherHello!  My name is Heather Coffman, and I am the new Health and Wellness Director at the Ottumwa Family YMCA.  My background in good health is extensive and began at Central College in Pella.  Moving forward I earned my PhD in Kinesiology from Iowa State University.  While teaching at ISU I also worked at UnityPoint Health-Grinnell as the Corporate Wellness Coordinator.  In addition, I coordinated corporate health screenings and initiated a Diabetes Prevention Program.  I’ve also taught a variety of group fitness classes including Spinning, HIIT, strength training and kickboxing.

Experience has shown me there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to wellness and I believe it is vital to identify an individual’s needs to build a healthy lifestyle.  At the Ottumwa Family YMCA, I find this belief supported where there are many group fitness instructors and personal trainers dedicated to meeting member’s needs and fitness goals through a variety of fun, motivating programs.

Improving quality of life is not just my job, it’s at the heart of everything I do. Living in Grinnell with my husband and 6 boys, I thrive in a lively, active household.  Sharing my dedication to good health, my husband is the Activities Director for the Grinnell School District.  Laying foundations for successful futures, my children stay healthy and active through involvement in various sports.  I am excited by this opportunity to assist the community of Ottumwa in building a better tomorrow through Ottumwa Family YMCA health and wellness programming!
