YMCA Transitions to Support Pandemic Response Efforts

Dear YMCA Members and Staff,
At the Y, the health and safety of the communities we serve has always been our top priority. In light of the most recent recommendations from the Iowa Department of Public Health and other health officials designed to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, the Ottumwa Family YMCA is implementing the following measures, effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020 until Monday, April 13, 2020. (These dates are subject to change.)

• All group fitness classes, water and land and personal training sessions are suspended until further notice. This includes water exercise classes, Group X classes, Pilate Reformers and all Silver Sneakers and Active Older Adult (AOA) classes and programming.
• Adult lap swim will continued at scheduled times.
• Youth programming is suspended. This includes Youth Sports and Private and Group swim lessons.
• Kids Cove and Youth Zone will be closed.
• Early Learning Discovery Lane licensed childcare will remain open to registered users.
• Youth members 10 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while using Y facilities.
• We are not able to issue guest or day passes or honor visitor passes.
• Facility rentals and birthday parties will not be available.
• The Y will be implementing restrictions designed to help members maintain Centers for Disease Control social distancing guidelines when using the facility. (Hand washing, cover mouth and control coughing, if you are feeling
ill please do not enter YMCA facility.)
• Pella Therapy, land and water, will continue as scheduled. Physical therapy clients should contact their therapist regarding any changes.
• Healthy Kids Day and the Wheelchair basketball Tournament are being postponed.
• The Y supports the recommendation of the Iowa Department of Public Health that individuals 60 years of age and older with underlying health conditions should stay at home and avoid situations of potential exposure.
• Through signage and intercom announcements, we are reminding members to help prevent the spread of illness by taking the following steps:
1.) Members and staff should not come to the Y if they are sick.
2.) Thoroughly clean all machines and equipment before and after each use, using the sanitary wipes provided.
3.) Practice hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette measures:

a. Wash hands frequently with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds and use the hand sanitizer provided before and after working out
b. Cough or sneeze into a tissue and discard the tissue after use
c. Avoid personal contact such as handshakes or high-fives

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank our members for their patience and understanding. We believe this is the socially responsible thing to do during this national health emergency.
The leadership team at your Y is monitoring all local, state and national developments around the clock. We will provide you with regular updates and are prepared to take additional steps as needed to safeguard the health and well-being of our members, staff and communities.

We are in unprecedented times, calling for an unprecedented response on the part of all individuals and organizations in the community. Please stick with us as we work through this challenge, so we can be here for you better and stronger than ever once the crisis has passed.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the Y or email
Thank you for your positive support as we go through this effort together
